Measure at Different Times

Foot size naturally changes throughout the day as your feet expand with use and time spent standing, so measuring at different times can produce slightly different results—measuring later in the day gives the widest fit that your shoe will need to accommodate.

Measure Foot Length
Place your foot against a wall and measure from heel to your longest toe. Measure both feet and use the larger.

Add approximately 8–12 mm to your foot length to allow for natural movement. This may vary slightly depending on the shoe style. For dress shoes 6 - 8 mm and for boots up to 10 - 15 mm. You want enough space so your toes don’t hit the front during movement, but not so much that your foot slides.

Measure Foot Width (Ball of Foot)
Measure around the widest part of your foot—the ball (where your toes meet your foot).

  • Stand with full weight on your foot
  • Wrap a tape measure snug (not tight) and keep it straight

This measurement determines how your foot sits and functions in the shoe. Compare your measurement to the footbed width:

When Trying On

  • Stand, don’t sit
  • Allow ~8 - 12 mm space at the toes
  • Ensure the widest part of your foot aligns with the widest part of the shoe
  • Heel should feel secure, without slipping
