Three straps cross the foot, each closing with a gold-tone pin buckle, and a braided section runs across the instep and toe. All three straps adjust, so you can set the hold over the toes and the midfoot separately. This is the narrow (N) fitting, cut for a slimmer foot, and it runs in sizes 36 to 42. Expect the footbed to take an impression of your foot over the first few weeks of regular wear.

The Madrid in EVA is about as straightforward as a sandal gets, and that is the appeal. Birkenstock moulds it from a single piece of EVA, so the strap, footbed and sole are all one unit with nothing stitched or glued, and the whole thing is light in the hand. Underfoot you still get the familiar shaping - a raised toe bar, arch contour and deep heel cup - while the sole is ridged around the edge. The one strap closes with a moulded, Birkenstock-stamped buckle and pin, so you set the tension across the forefoot once and then simply step in and out. This is the narrow fitting, cut closer through the foot, in a plain black that goes with denim shorts, linen and wet swimmers alike.
