If you have just purchased a pair of smooth leather or oiled leather shoes you may wonder, how are they best maintained and cared for? The anser is easy: regularly clean and condition the leather with a suitable product that nourishes and enhances it.
The next question may be: what or which is a suitable product? Lets start with describing the type of leather. Smooth leather has a sleek surface, while oiled leather features a matte finish achieved through the application of oils and waxes during the crafting process.
Using products such as polishes, creams, and waxes helps preserve the integrity and appearance of the shoe’s surface.
Recently, Bondi Beeswax sent me a sample of their leather conditioner to try.

👢 Our Real-World Test: Birkenstock StalonII Sandcastle Boots
We chose a pair of relatively new oiled leather Birkenstock Stalon II boots—beautiful leather, but already showing a few scuffs on the toe cap from everyday wear.
First step? A patch test (always wise!).
➡️ Immediate effect: leather darkened slightly.
➡️ After 24 hours: most of the product had soaked in, and the colour lightened a bit—but settled into a deeper, richer tone. I loved it. Oiled leather is meant to evolve, and this looked intentional—like the leather’s natural patina deepening.
Then my son (yes, my son—teenagers and shoe care don’t usually mix!) took over the full application. He rubbed in a small amount with a soft cloth, working in circular motions. Surprisingly little product was needed—and he got beautifully even coverage.
✨ The result?
-
Scuff mark? Nearly gone.
-
Leather? Supple, nourished, and glowing with a soft, matte richness.
-
Stitching? Revived and protected.
-
Overall vibe? Like the boots had just come back from a luxury spa.

🐝 Final Thoughts: Would I Stock It?
Whether you’re caring for smooth calf leather or matte oiled finishes (like these Birks), this conditioner feeds the leather—not just coats it. It’s the kind of product that respects the material, enhances its character, and aligns with values: natural, local, and kind—to leather, people, and pets.
